What is dry ice and how is it made?

The key ingredient to Dry Ice Blasting is solid carbon dioxide (CO2),which has a low temperature of negative 78 degrees Celsius or negative 109 degrees Fahrenheit. Dry ice changes from a solid to a gas without going through the liquid stage, which is important in Dry Ice Blasting because it leaves behind no secondary waste or moisture. Dry ice is manufactured by releasing pressurized liquid CO2 into chambers where it expands. As the liquid turns to gas, the temperature of the substance drops rapidly, which turns about half of the liquid into flakes. The flakes are pressed together to form blocks or pellets of dry ice.

A brief history of dry ice
