What is dry ice and how is it made?

The key ingredient to Dry Ice Blasting is solid carbon dioxide (CO2),which has a low temperature of negative 78 degrees Celsius or negative 109 degrees Fahrenheit. Dry ice changes from a solid to a gas without going through the liquid stage, which is important in Dry Ice Blasting because it leaves behind no secondary waste or moisture. Dry ice is manufactured by releasing pressurized liquid CO2 into chambers where it expands. As the liquid turns to gas, the temperature of the substance drops rapidly, which turns about half of the liquid into flakes. The flakes are pressed together to form blocks or pellets of dry ice.

A brief history of dry ice

Dry ice is believed to have been first observed in the early 1800s by a French inventor, but wasn’t used commercially until 1920s when the DryIce Corporation of America began selling it for refrigeration purposes.

Today, dry ice is used to form “fog” in the entertainment industry, but is also used to refrigerate perishable goods while in transport, and has scientific uses as well.

Dry ice blasting

Mold Experts utilizes technology that forces compressed air over the CO2 pellets, which are located in a tube connected to a variety of tip sizes that are chosen depending on the job. Dry Ice Pellets shooting out of the tip is aimed at affected surfaces. When the pellets, which are negative 109 degree Fahrenheit, hit their target, the molecules of the target (dirt, paint, adhesive, soot, etc.) shrink, which cause them to seemingly disappear from the surface to which they were connected.

Why use dry ice for cleaning?

Mold Experts utilizes the same grade of dry ice in its cleaning solutions that is used by medical and food organizations. It is relatively inexpensive, which allows Mold Experts to pass those savings on to clients.

The result is absolutely no water waste. What is left are simply remnants of the contaminant, which can be easily swept or vacuumed up. It’s a revolutionary technology that has allowed Mold Experts clients a quick and affordable, yet high end method of decontaminating, deodorizing and cleaning. It’s also a trusted alternative to abrasive forms of cleaning, like sand blasting, powder blasting, water blasting, and steam cleaning.

Is dry ice blasting safe?

CO2, the key component in Dry Ice Blasting, is an odorless, colorless, naturally occurring gas that is non toxic at ordinary levels. It’s what people exhale and what plants breathe in. It’s also what provides the fizziness in our carbonated beverages and what makes food rise when baking soda or baking powder are used in recipes.

Dry Ice Blasting is the safe, nonflammable, nonconductive and effective way of getting rid of the contaminants that can be harmful to humans, including mold and mildew. It can also decontaminate surfaces that have been compromised by listeria, salmonella, E. coli, and other bacteria that can cause sickness and death.

*Upon contact, traditional blasting materials become contaminated when used to clean hazardous substances and objects. These blasting materials are then classified as toxic waste and require appropriate safe disposal.
